Styling Tips: Colored Denim

It seems like everywhere I go nowadays, I hear people talking about the red pants Justin Bieber wore to the Video Music Awards (no I don’t). Since I always follow whatever trend The Biebs is rocking (I don’t), I decided to run out and buy a pair myself (I already owned them and have for about a year).

Colored denim is one of those trends that seem like it should be super easy, but come actual execution time, it proves to be a bit trickier than just slapping on a t-shirt and rolling on out the door.

  • Colored denim was a major trend this spring/summer, but, worn in the right way, it can easily transition into fall. Pair brightly colored pants with a chunky cream knit sweater for a look that is comfy and almost exactly like last year, but way more Rainbow Bright approved (Oh. And it’s more fashionable)
  • Easy does it! Justin Bieber is one of the most confident people ever, which I know from watching Never Say Never twice, so it’s no surprise that he is fine wearing bright red. For those of us who aren’t so attention-seeking, consider colored denim in cobalt blue. It’s similar to the denim you already wear, but way more chic
  • Whenever you have a loud trend like this, steer away from wearing other loud trends at the same time. Instead, pair colored denim with classic pieces, like a black blazer, a chunky gold watch, black ballet flats, and a black and white stripped tee.  That being said, risky accents, like J.Biebs’s leopard sneaks, work come nighttime. Treat leopard smoker flats like a neutral and just don’t go too crazy with the rest of the outfit. Remember: Boys like when you act crazy. Not when you look it.

Will you be wearing colored denim this fall or do you think it looks a wee bit ridiculous/Delias catalog?

Sometimes, when something has a lot of hype surrounding it, people lose site of reality. This is exactly what has happened with Banana Republic’s Mad Men collection.

People hear Mad Men and they instantly begin convulsing and not just because of John Hamm (but kind of just because of John Hamm). The collection carries 65 pieces, all of which have had people ooh and aah all over the Internet. The men’s collection isn’t horrible, although I fear it will be used to poorly execute Ryan-Gosling-in-Crazy-Stupid-Love style, but what are you going to do? The women’s collection, however, really isn’t anything to go “mad” (get it?) over. It looks vaguely like, well, any other Banana Republic collection.

The polished, ladylike style of Mad Men is perfect for fall. Just not with the official Mad Men collection. Here are some pieces to help you achieve the look in a way that doesn’t say, “Hey, do you boys want me to put in some Bagel Bites?”

  • Songs of Yesterday Dress, $89.99, ModCloth.com: The neckline of this dress makes it appropriate for a night out, not just the office
  • Cafe Capril in Floral Taffeta, $198.00, JCrew.com: In general, if J. Crew were a boy, I would totally make out with him. These pants just confirm that.
  • No. 2 Pencil Skirt in Leopard, $118, JCrew.com: This season is proving that you don’t have to drink caw-fee to wear leopard. Treat the print like a neutral for a look that is more sleek than Staten Island
  • Roxanne Keeper Suede Loafer Pump, $280, ShopBop.com: I typically don’t like spending more than Had In My Closet Forever on shoes, so I won’t be adding these pricey DVF puppies to my closet. That being said, if H&M comes out with a sturdy-heeled loafers, I’ll put down some $cash$.
  • Drama Velvet Flats, $140, ShopBop.com: For your inner Don.
  • House of Holland Chain Suspender Tights, $28, UrbanOutfitters.com: Anyone who has ever decided they were going to wear thigh-highs knows how anyone thigh-highs are. Tugging at the material on your upper-thigh isn’t the most lady-like thing around, but they’re so damn cute. House of Holland came out with a nice compromise. It’s only sort of required that you wink an inappropriate and weird amount when rocking these.
